Managing Trauma with Hypnotherapy
Feeling constantly on high alert, exhausted by stress? Perhaps you’re worried that seeking help means reliving painful memories?
If you are living with the effects of trauma, PTSD or complex trauma, it can feel overwhelming. You may recognise some of the following:
- Feeling constantly on edge, hypervigilant, or waiting for the worst case scenario
- Your mind won’t stop racing, and intrusive thoughts keep breaking through
- Even small day-today things can feel completely overwhelming
- You struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up feeling unrefreshed
- You feel mentally cluttered, stuck, or emotionally reactive
It might feel like you have tried everything… and nothing has really worked.
The good news is that your brain has a natural ability to process experiences and recover, epecially when your nervous system feels safe, rested, and supported.
Hypnotherapy for Trauma in Cirencester, Stroud & Online
I offer solution focused hypnotherapy for trauma from my practices in Cirencester and Stroud, as well as online sessions across the UK and the world.
So whether you prefer to:
- attend sessions in person locally or
- work together from the comfort of your home
…we can focus on helping you feel safer, calmer, and more in control in the present.
How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy Can Help
Unlike some traditional therapies, we don’t ask you to repeatedly go back over distressing events or analyse every detail of the past. Instead, we look at where you are now and where you want to be.
During our sessions, we work together to:
- Reduce the Pressure: We focus on emptying your “stress bucket” so your brain and body finally have the opportunity to settle and recover
- Improve Sleep: By calming the nervous system and supporting healthy REM sleep, we help your brain process experiences naturally.
- Strengthen Resilience: Gently shifting focus onto what feels manageable can help reduce the mind’s constant sense f threat, improving your confidence and day-to-day functioning.
- Utilise Hypnosis: Hypnosis provides a state of focused attention and deep relaxation, helping you feel less mentally cluttered and/or exhausted and more receptive to positive, future-focused change.
Trauma is complex, and support should always be tailored to you. You only ever need to share what feels comfortable and useful for you.
(Note if you are struggling with severe psychiatric symptoms or are in crisis, please ensure you also speak with your GP or an appropriately qualified mental health professional).
How Many Sessions Will I need?
This varies, but many people notice positive changes within a few sessions. Most clients coming to see me for trauma have between 8 to 12 sessions. Some may have more than this so changes can become more established.
Everyone works at their own pace – no pressure.

Trauma & Hypnotherapy – Your Questions Answered
How can Hypnotherapy help with trauma if we aren't analysing the past?
Trauma keeps your emotional brain on constant high alert, which overloads your "stress bucket" and disrupts your sleep. When you are chronically exhausted and stressed, your brain loses its natural ability to process past experiences. By using a present and future focused approach, we work to lower your overall anxiety and calm your nervous system. This creates the safe mental and physical conditions your brain needs to naturally process things, settle down, and help you feel back in control.
What does the hypnosis part feel like?
The feeling of hypnosis can vary quite a lot between individuals and often feels different on the separate occasions we experience it. It is a very safe, ordinary, and pleasant experience. It is typically described as a state of focused attention and deep relaxation, similar to being completely absorbed in a good book or daydreaming while out for a walk. You remain fully in control at all times. In clinical practice, clients find that this deep relaxation is incredibly valuable for calming a mind that usually feels constantly on edge or exhausted by hypervigilance.
Can hypnotherapy help improve my sleep if it's been disrupted by trauma?
Yes, absolutely. Research suggests that REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep plays a vital role in emotional processing and memory integration. When trauma causes nightmares, flashbacks, or hypervigilance, your sleep suffers, making daytime anxiety and irritability much worse. By using hypnotherapy to empty your "stress bucket" and reduce daytime anxiety, we help improve your sleep quality, giving your brain the opportunity it needs to recover and rest.
Is solution focused hypnotherapy right for PTSD or Complex Trauma?
Because trauma affects everyone differently, there is no single approach that works for everyone. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be highly effective for managing trauma-related symptoms like hypervigilance, poor sleep, overwhelm, and emotional reactivity. It is particularly well-suited for individuals who want practical support but do not feel ready or willing to do traditional talk therapy.
Please note: Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for support and stability, but it is not a substitute for psychiatric or crisis care. If you are experiencing severe symptoms of PTSD or Complex PTSD, it is important to consult with your GP or an appropriately qualified mental health professional.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies, but many people notice positive changes within a few sessions. Solution focused hypnotherapy is considered a brief therapy. Most clients coming to see me for trauma related challenges have between 8 to 12 sessions. Some may have more than this so changes can become more established.
Everyone works at their own pace and I simply ask at the end of each session if you would like to come back next week – no pressure.
