Managing Stress with Hypnotherapy
Feeling permanently overloaded, wound up, or like you’re just about coping?
If you’re dealing with stress, it can feel relentless. You may recognise some of the following:
- You feel constantly “switched on” and can’t properly relax
- Your patience is shorter than it used to be
- You feel overwhelmed by things that didn’t use to bother you
- Your sleep, appetite or energy have started to suffer
- You feel like you’re just getting through each day rather than living it
You might feel like you should be coping better, or that everyone else seems to manage fine.
The good news is this doesn’t have to be permanent.
Hypnotherapy for Stress in Cirencester, Stroud & Online
I offer hypnotherapy for stress from my practices in Cirencester and Stroud, as well as online sessions across the UK and the world.
So whether you prefer to:
- attend sessions in person locally, or
- work together from the comfort of your home
you can get the support that works best for you.
How I Can Help You
I specialise in helping people reduce stress and build genuine resilience using solution focused hypnotherapy.
Rather than just talking about the problem, we work with the part of your mind where stress responses actually come from – so change can feel more natural and long lasting.
Clients often begin to notice:
- A calmer, more manageable baseline
- More patience and headspace
- Feeling more in control rather than reactive
- Better sleep
- More energy and resilience to cope with day-to-day pressure

What is Happening When You Feel Stressed?
Stress isn’t a flaw or weakness – it’s your body’s natural response to pressure or demand.
A useful way to think about it is a stress bucket. Life constantly adds a bit of stress to the bucket – work, relationships, health, money, the daily grind. We all need ways of letting some out, or the bucket fills up. When it fills faster than it empties, that’s when stress starts to spill over into how you think, feel and behave.
According to the HSE’s most recent workplace statistics, an estimated 964,000 UK workers were affected by work-related stress, depression or anxiety in 2024/25 – so if this feels overwhelming, you are very far from alone.
Left unaddressed, stress can lead to:
- constant tension or feeling “wired”
- physical symptoms (poor sleep, low energy, tension headaches, digestive issues)
- difficulty switching off or relaxing
- it tipping over into anxiety or panic
We don’t focus on labelling you – we focus on helping your mind and body learn a calmer way to respond, so your bucket empties as well as fills.
What Happens in a Session?
One of the biggest worries people have is: “What will actually happen?“
Here’s what to expect, whether it’s in Cirencester, Stroud or online:
1. The “talking” part
We’ll gently explore:
- what’s already going well for you, even if it’s only very small things to begin with
- what you would like to change
You’ll also come to understand how your brain works in a simple, reassuring way, tailored to your situation – including how your own stress bucket fills and empties.
2. Hypnotherapy
You’ll be guided into a calm, relaxed state (similar to daydreaming).
In this state:
- your mind becomes more receptive to helpful change
- you experience deep relaxation
- stress patterns begin to shift
You are in control throughout this process. Each session lasts 50 to 60 minutes.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
This varies, but many people notice positive changes within a few sessions. Most clients coming to see me for stress have between 8 to 12 sessions. Some may have more than this so changes can become more established.
Everyone works at their own pace – no pressure.
Lasting Change is Possible
If you’ve been running on empty for a while, it can feel like this is just how life is now. It isn’t.
With the right approach, your mind and body can learn to feel calmer, more resilient, and more in control again.
What Clients Say:
“I would like to cancel this week and go it alone for a while. I feel better than I have in years and feel my life is in such a very positive place and trajectory. I believe seeing you has been instrumental in my gaining back control of my life and emotions.” – Emma

Stress and Hypnotherapy FAQs
What's the difference between stress, anxiety and a panic attack?
They sit on the same spectrum but aren't quite the same thing. Stress is usually a response to an external pressure – too much on your plate, a demanding period at work, a difficult life event – and tends to ease once that pressure lifts. Anxiety can persist even when there's no obvious external trigger, and often shows up as ongoing worry or a racing mind. A panic attack is a sudden, intense spike of physical and emotional symptoms. In practice, stress that isn't addressed can tip over into anxiety or panic attacks over time, which is one reason it's worth dealing with early. If what you're experiencing sounds more like ongoing worry or sudden panic, my Anxiety or Panic Attacks pages may be a better starting point.
Do I have to talk about my past or what's causing my stress in detail?
No. Often one of the biggest reliefs for my clients is that we do not need to 'dig up' the past or dwell on the causes to get results. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy focuses on your 'preferred future' – and the steps you can readily take to move towards it. This gives the brain a picture to work towards, rather than one we want to run away from. When we work like this, the mind's innate processing systems work optimally, and it becomes easier to let go of the stress response. We move into a calmer, more agile, more rational state of mind.
Will I lose control or be made to do anything against my will?
This is a common myth often based on stage hypnosis. The method of hypnosis used in the clinical environment varies significantly from that used for entertainment. In a clinical setting, you are always in control. Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention, much like being 'in the zone' while running or getting lost in a good book. You can open your eyes, speak, or even end the session at any time. My role is simply to help guide you into that natural and enjoyable state of trance where your mind and body can relax, become more open to beneficial suggestions and learn new ways of thinking and responding.
Can I have sessions online, and are they as effective as in-person?
Yes, I offer sessions both at my clinics in Stroud and Cirencester in Gloucestershire and online via Zoom. Online hypnotherapy is just as effective as in-person sessions. For many people managing stress, being in the comfort of your own home actually makes it easier to relax. As long as you have a quiet space where you won't be disturbed and a stable internet connection, you will likely receive the same therapeutic benefits.
When should I see my GP about stress rather than, or as well as, a hypnotherapist?
If stress is affecting your physical health, mood or ability to function day to day, or if you're experiencing low mood, hopelessness or thoughts of harming yourself, it's important to speak to your GP as a first step. They can rule out or address any underlying medical causes and make sure you have the right support in place. Hypnotherapy works well alongside this, and many clients come to me once they've already had that conversation.
